I actually am working on parts of an amazon get-up, funny that should be mentioned.

They are matching as in they are themed together.
Around the sides and the back of the shoes have scenes from a story they right shoe has the indoor scenes and the left with the outdoor.

Well sure, you can claim anything matches with a theme.

My left shoe is red, and my right shoe is yellow. They match because they're themed around primary colours.

And my penis is blue, but that's less to do with the theme, and more to do with Smurfette being a slut.

I agree you could claim anything that matches with a theme. You could go take a shoe from 2 different sets and make it work because they are the same style.
But when I did these I chose to make them different because I wanted them to show different personalities of the two soul mates (no pun intended). She loves to take solitary rambles outside while he is more comfortable in a study or a library (which was a pain in the butt to draw all of those books I might add). On the outside of the shoes it has them together disagreeing with each other and then has them falling in love. On the inside it shows them looking out into the distance thinking of one another.
